Going for a few days. Looking to book somewhere to stay - cheap, cheerful & clean. Needs to be close to all the "ACTION".
Any advise. |

Lovejoy.
There are NO girly bars in Malate they all closed about 15 years ago! There are places where freelancers hang out but you should not touch them with a barge pole! They will roll you in the room or have relationships with the police (prostitution all of a sudden becomes illegal when the taxi stops near a cop on your way back to the hotel!) Girls go freelance often when they have fallen out with the bar scene (stealing or working whist suspended with STD, yes girls are require regular checkups when working in the bars).
Malate bars are primarily for 'locals' now and are VERY run down. I had a drunken bum come after me with a machete there as (stupidly) I was wearing a Rolex a while back. Many locals 'pack' and there are problems on a regular basis in Malate.
If you are looking for expat type bars you should be in Makati ... either going to Burgos St or going over to EDSA Entertainment Complex near the airport. The bars there, Firehouse etc all used to be located in Malate/Mabini back in the day ...
Another choice would be Quezon Ave. Going to the likes of Airforce One or Class Mates where the top birds work ... FHM birds and minor celebrities can be 'met' there!
On a Friday or Saturday evening it will take you at least 45 mins to get to Makati in a taxi from Malate.
If you can/want to change your booking let me know and I'll help out if you want. |

Malate was close to the action about 1990!
It's very run down over there now. you have got A few bars but not where near THE action by any stretch of the imagination ... |

Was there over Christmas, and stayed at the InterContinental in Makati.
Nice hotel, close to bars, shops, restaurants etc etc. |

Go for Holy week (Easter to you and I) and go to San Fernando.
You get to see live crucifictions, all in the name of our good Lord. |

I stayed in a hotel called the Linden Suites for a couple of days and then with a Filipino family for the rest of the time.
The Linden Suites was ok. Only £90 per night for a 5*, but then not the greatest 5* you are likely to see. Staying with the family in Rosario, Pasig City was the real experience. Like I said, Filipino hospitality is superb. |

I was there over Christmas, and apart from the odd person trying to rip you off or pick your pocket, I didn't have any trouble. Like Lee Trundle said, it's only in Mindanao where there is real danger of kidnapping etc.
I thought the food was lovely, the people incredibly friendly and hospitable, with more than enough places to "enjoy" yourself. If you get the chance to travel to Tagaytay or Boracay then give it a go. |
